A little bit about the anatomy of the heart:
The heart is the strongest muscle in the body, constantly pumping blood into different organs of your body. The heart moves blood full of oxygen, nutrients, water and waste to and from every part of your body.
A heart is about the size of a person’s clenched fist. It has 2 sides ; left and right side each side having an specific name being the atrium ( top part) , and the ventricle ( bottom part). Both sides have a vein where blood flows into the atrium. Valves control where the blood goes and separate the atrium from the ventricle. Other valves control the flow of blood from the ventricle to the artery that sends blood back to the body.
The heart is made of muscle that by contracting builds up a blood pressure by pumping blood throughout the whole body, this is known as “beating” of the heart.
I wont get into detailed information about the heart because I could write and write and write …. And I will lose the main point of this post being how did we get from this beating, muscle heart to the heart of love and emotion.
So just having a vague idea of what the heart is for our body, you can understand it is like the core of your body, the pump that keeps you alive.
My interest in the anatomy of the body an the functions of our systems interest me so much that I’ve reached into old boxes of schools things and found my biology books from my sophomore year at CHS with my teacher my. Goddess. He made class very fun and he always gave us a bunch of interactive activities and projects. He would hang on the walls the best projects and it was a constant competition In class to have the best and “prettiest” work.
I have also gotten out my massive notebooks and handouts from my biology class in IB from Iran. I didn’t discover my love and intrigue about the human body till recently. I was always interested in it but I never made it a big deal, never thought anything serious of it. Maybe the fact that the hospital has become such a common place to be and that doctors have become the subject of conversation these past few years, or the fact that I have more dr. numbers in my mobile … I don’t know. I Only know that I realized that with this disconnected personality of mine that so many take as cold and distant, I have come to feel so strong about this whole world of medicine.
So enough of that and lets get to the part where the heart has been taken as a symbol of love and morality and why.

in the past, the heart was believed to be the intellectual core of a person, instead of the brain. from ancient mythologies and religion, the heart was always the core of the human mind. taken from its word root and back to latin, in many languages it is defined as the core and soul of a person or things.
In european traditions, the heart has been drawn in a more styled shape pleasant to the eye where it is typically the color red of blood and passion. it has been like this since the 15th century and is now particularly associated with a romantic love. the heart shape has made a controversy as some people believe that its actually depicting the heart of a cow, more than a human heart. Others say that the heart shape is actually to depict a woman's body.
whatever all the history of how the pumping muscle heart came to be the typical love heart we see everywhere nowdays, i understand why they chose to use the heart as the symbol of love.
When you fall in love with a person, you feel something strong in your chest. you feel like your heart pumps a bit faster and just the same when you get heartbroken, you feel the pain in your chest. The idea of having a loved one, they most of the time become a huge part of your life, and without them you feel blue and sad and sometimes to extremes you get depressed and you feel like you will die without them.
The heart is such a vital organ in the body, it gives life to the rest of your body and it is constantly working in order for the rest fo your body to work successfully. so yes, it is the core of you and whatever you feel will be very much felt around that area.
i thought i was going to get into huge detail about this topic since it is a very interesting one. but i have been awake most nights and i am so tired now that all i wish is for this post to be done.
